Rodie, The word elliptical means "shaped like an oval". The elliptical machine is a lot less impact on the joints, is less jarring and your feet never leave the foot pads which is still weight bearing and helps promote bone density. Also remember that with this machine your movements are all forward and there is no back and forth motion for your hips and legs to adapt to. The handle bars which give you an upper body workout hence gives it the name "cross trainer" These two names literally mean the same thing being that the motion is in a forward oval arc hence the word elliptical and then the upper body workout is called cross training. Many times you will see the name "Elliptical cross training machine". When buying one, make sure you actually get on it, try it and see how it fits to your body, is it adjustable, what are the resistance settings and does it have a warranty? All these are good things to ask and try. Exercise equipment can be expensive and like a car, which we would never buy without test driving, the same should be said about the equipment. Never buy before testing it yourself to see how it accommodates you and not how you accommodate it. The only exception to this rule was when I bought my Bowflex which came in 12 different boxes via UPS BUT I had previously used a friends AND I had the 60 day return guarantee as well. Get a machine that you are comfortable with, that has the most degrees of variances and the best warranty. Price should not be the determining factor to a point when buying equipment. The old saying rings true here, you get what you pay for or at least that has been my personal experience. All that being said though Sears will back you up. At Sears, the squeakiest wheel gets the most grease and they will take care of an unsatisfied customer in a heartbeat! Good luck and don't concentrate on the names just the equipment you have in mind. What you looked at will give you a great low impact, cardio workout and that is great! Take care an sorry so long but then, you know me,
David
