I have started, restarted, kinda started and pseudostarted Low Carb so many times now.....but I'm not sticking to it. I know this sounds crazy, but no matter how well I'm doing, and how well I'm losing.....I go off plan. And it's not even for a good reason (like a birthday or something) it's just because I get lazy, make excuses for myself and fall back to my old ways of eating. I'm so frustrated with myself. Since I had been doing bad lately, I decided to do another induction to get things rolling again. I did a legal 1 week induction....and lost NOTHING! I think my body has gotten use to the inductions now (since I do them way too often...then faulter) that it's not even losing anymore.
Any words of wisdom to help me get my head on straight? I do believe in the low-carb way of life and believe it works tremendously.....but I'm not "working it" right now. Please help if you can. I know you can't lose the weight for me, but please help my sort out my head...... _________________ Jerri in Georgia

Oh, Jerri, I so understand where you are. It's where I have been so many times on so many OTHER diets. On LC, though, there are so many foods that you CAN have! What kinds of things are pulling you off track? The thing is, it's okay (at least it is for me and my doctor says so, too) to take a day or a meal off every once in a while. The thing to do, though, is get right back on the horse and look forward to your next "day off." It's what I do. I took a meal off for my husband's birthday, and I enjoyed, guilt free, wonderful Bohemian raised dumplings and a lovely berry tart for dessert. Still making my mouth water to think about it! But I'm not going to just stay off the wagon because of it, I jumped right back into LC the next meal and am looking forward to Mother's Day, when I plan to take another break. For me, I have to do this every so often or I'll fall off completely because you're right, it's too easy to fall back into the old ways.
I know you can do this -- and we're all here to help you!!!!!
Maybe think about what is drawing you off track, and if you can't think of a substitution for what ever it is, we can help you! _________________ Christine

This may be confusing (at least it is to me). It's not a food that is pulling me off track. I LOVE the low carb foods...I really do. I do occasionally miss the breads and rice....but everything else is great and a way I like to eat. The problem is in my head. I feel all naked and alone when I know I don't have my trusty comfort foods available. Perhaps I'm rebellious...I don't know. I do know it's not a food problem for me as much as it is an emotional/mental thing. I know this doesn't make sense, but best I can tell....that's what's going on. _________________ Jerri in Georgia

I had this wonderful reply all typed up, and messed up, and it didn't post, so I'm going to try again.
What it sounds like to me is that you need to discover what your LC comfort foods are! I have embraced new ones that just work for me. I love this diet because of the things I can have, not the things I can't.
If I can do this -- I'm 44 and starting LC just six months ago -- then I know you can, too! If you are interested, I'll be happy to give you my email address so we can correspond off list -- I'm in Colorado, so long distance support is about all I can offer -- but I'd be happy to do it! Just let me know! _________________ Christine

Jerri,
I've had the same problem -- the first 6 months I wasn't doing low carb right, for example I was eating Atkins peanut butter cups every night and popcorn at the movies. I didn't really get "it" until I saw George Stella on TV.
Then I went on, weight loss was slow, I kept getting discouraged. I think you just get to a place where losing weight -- and a lot of it -- is the most important thing in your life.
Here's a tip; I figured out my favorite LC foods and compiled a binder with them so when starting fresh I only eat my favorites, it seems to work in keeping me on the LC path, I almost don't notice and I seem to get a quick start.
The other -- albiet controversial one -- tip is to try a 3-day meat and egg fast. Sometimes striping down your diet to the basics for three days kills the cravings, revs you up and jumpstarts it.
Otherwise, remember every tiny baby step counts and eventually you'll get there.
Good luck.
