I made these the other day... I detest Parm Cheese, so I didn't put that on. I would have tried some Cheddar Cheese pwd if I'd had any. I used to have some, but don't now. I'm gonna try to find some. But I'm really afraid it might have stuff in it that I don't want to use.
They are pretty good, but I do wish I could figure something to coat them with that is cheesy. I think I used just over 1/3 cup of Cheddar/Monterey Jack shredded cheese. Next time I'll use at least the 1/2 cup, maybe more.

Cheatos Cheese Puffs

3 egg whites
1/8 tsp cream of tartar
A pinch of salt
1/4 cup to 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (frozen)

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Put the frozen cheese in a food processor/blender and chop, until it's in tiny little pieces.

In a mixing bowl, blend first three ingredients, at high speed, until whites form stiff peaks. Sprinkle the chopped cheese, on top of the egg whites. Then, with a teaspoon or a rubber spatula, fold the cheese into the egg whites, VERY CAREFULLY, being careful not to disturb the fluffy whites, but thoroughly spread the cheese, throughout.

Then, using the tip of a teaspoon handle (not the spoon part), dip tiny little clouds of the mixture, and place on a cookie sheet. I would suggest using a sheet of parchment or a silicon baking sheet, but if you don't...spray the sheet, very well.

Then, lightly spray the tops of the puffs, with butter flavored cooking spray. Then, sprinkle grated parmesan cheese, on top of each puff. Then, put another coat of buttery spray, on top of that.

Bake at 300 degrees, for about 20-minutes. For crispier puffs, turn off the oven, and leave them in the oven for at least an hour. I have a gas oven, and left my last batch in the oven, overnight. The pilot light in the oven, kept it warm enough, that the "Cheatos" were VERY crispy. I then put them in an air-tight ziplock, and two days later, they were still crispy.

I'll have to try them too! We love cheetos. I tried another recipe similar to this one called parmesan puffs, but they weren't too good. Those were fried, not baked and I also think I had too much parm cheese in them.

I know Billie, ANY parm is too much! Smile

yum...I'll try these and report back....I think I have seen popcorn cheese and some other kind of molly mcbutter kind of powdered cheese Billie....check both the herb section and the popcorn section.

I looked today at Wal*Mart. They didn't have the MollyMcButter cheese. I did find a canned cheese pwd near the Mac&Cheese. I bought a can to try. It sure is a small "can". What I had years ago was larger (or at least I remember it as larger). A little pricey too. But maybe it will work, and won't be too bad. I had hope to try adding a little in the puffs. Maybe I still will. When I get around to making them again. Not sure if I'll have time tomorrow.
When I make them, I'll probably spray them with Pam (or such) then put them in a plastic bag, and sprinkle in some cheese pwd & shake. I think I'd end up with more on the pan than the pooffs if I tried sprinklin it on.

The only cheese pwd type stuff I found by the pop corn had way too many no no ingredients in it for me. Corn syrup solids for one... And would you believe sugar? I also bought one box of Mac & cheese for the cheese packet. Problem was tho, it was a little hard to discern the ingredients in just the cheese packet. I think tho it was OK.

Hey Billie, that sounds like a great idea, doin the shakin in a bag thing. Still haven't made these yet, but will real soon, and am gonna put A LOT

do you like other hard cheeses? is it just parm? My fam always used Romano instead....which I still use....I think it's b/c Sicily is closer to Rome....anyway ...just curious if it was the smell or did you eat other hard cheeses that didn't have the smell......I remember when we were kids and mom could only find the powered canned parm and me and my sis would sneak to the fridge at night and take turns dumping it down our mouth.....mom would be SO mad to find her can emptyLOL

LOL, BB. That reminds me of the story my dad used to tell...his parents would send him to grate the cheese and told him that if he ate any before it was grated that it would give him worms. They would tell him that because he would always eat all the cheese before it was grated! LOL!

Casey-Lynn,
I'm not sure about all hard cheeses, but I have found that I don't like aged cheeses. For instance, I like provolone, but I don't like aged provolone.
The smell is a big part of it, but I don't like the taste either.

Your comment about you & your sister eating that Parm cheese right out of the can bout made me gag!!!

I hate to be gross, but Parm cheese tastes like it smells to me (like someone has already ate it & thrown back up! Sorry! but that what it smells & tastes like!!!!) I really cannot fathom how anyone can like it.
But everyone has different tastes.

I don't know much about different cheeses.

LOL OK I get it Billie....LOL sorry about that...but I really am laughing....I love ya anyway.

Ocean....isn't that always the first kitchen job you get as a kid.....cheese grater and veggie peeler.....I wonder if Vinnie is too young?

Well in my case it was cheese grater and bartender....it was the 70's after all...I'm telling you, my dad taught me how to pour a beer with just the right amount of head on it... Rolling Eyes

Vinnie might still be a tad too young. If you have blood and finger parts in your cheese, you'll know for sure.

LOL you may be right I'm still having trouble with him using my salad spinner....he isn't very coordinated....must get it from mama.
