This stuff is really good. Tastes kinda like oatmeal with a little milk in it. It can really hit the spot for breakfast or a hearty snack.

Ok, I really, really want to like this stuff. I have tried it several times but it's just yuck. It's not the taste, though. The taste is great. Thing is, mine always seems to be slimy. Does anyone else have this problem with cooking flax or am I doing something wrong? Maybe it's the type of flax I'm using (Bob's Red Mill organic golden). Maybe it's just one of those personal preference things....

Angie,
I haven't made mine in a while, but I don't remember it coming out slimy. I use the Hodgeson Mill brand. I do remember adding lots of butter and maple flavored syrup. If I don't have the maple, I just use the SF vanilla. I DO remember having to play around with mine a little to get it the way I wanted. One thing I do as well, beat up the egg really well before adding the flax, then when you add the flax, let it sit for a minute or two to thicken before microwaving.....Don't know if that will help, just sharing......

Angie, I don't know that mine is slimy but I do know that adding that peanut butter and whey low really change the texture. I tried it w/ butter and sweetner, etc. but I love the peanut butter. I have also ground my flaxseed and added just butter of equal amount and microwaved it. It is like eating it toasted, but it is grainy. I like the change on occasion. Donna

Angie,
Personally I don't think changing brands will help. Cause I have used different brands, and usually grind my own, and yes it is slimy.
I think the slimy texture may vary with liquid amounts tho.
Even tho it does seem slimy, I just ignore that. If you think about it, oatmeal is often slimy too.
I rarely eat mine with just cream & flax. I add other stuff to mine. (I "spoke" of this in an earlier post.) I usually add a little whey protein pwd, and sometimes other things. I don't add as much cream, and do add water. I guess I really never make it exactly the same way twice. _________________ Billie

Sorry Billie, I didn't see your post until just now.
I was thinking the same thing, I don't think changing brands will help. I guess I just won't have any. I have tried it with half almond meal and half flax meal and have added protein powder too. I've also played around with the amount of liquid. I can't get past the slimy texture. Which is too bad because I do like the way it tastes.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Angie, did you try it with the peanut butter and it was still slimy to you? I was eating mine this morning and thinking about you. I can see it as slimy before I add the whey low and peanut butter but after it isn't to me. So I was wondering about you when I was eating it. Donna

I have another idea. Try "cooking" it with less flax, make it kinda watery. then add some more to make it the consistancy you want. maybe that will cut some of the sliminess.... _________________ Dingie Dinah

Ok, I'll give it another shot with the peanut butter and "cooking" it the way Dinah suggests. It just might work.

Angie,
This morning I made a version of the hot flax cereal. I used 1/4 cup flax meal, 1 scoop whey protein pwd (I got a new one last week at GNC - 100% Whey Protein - chocolate caramel, and used that), abt a tsp cocoa, 1 pkt SweetLeaf Stevia, some Coconut cream (I didn't measure - just a little), and enough hot water to make it creamy. I nuked about 1 min & it was actually too thick, so added a bit more hot water to make it a creamy concistancy. This time it wasn't slimy at all. It was however a little sweeter than I would really have liked. I usually add coconut oil, but forgot this morning. Oh, and I forgot, I added some whole egg pwd, maybe 1 tsp (?), and maybe that much oat fiber. But you could easily leave out the egg pwd. I'm sure it didn't make that much diff in the slimyness. But the oat fiber may have helped. Maybe not. _________________ Billie
