George told me something at the GTG that I never realized about frozen meats.

I used to buy frozen chicken breast, hamburger meat, etc. from the Warehouse stores...thinking I was saving money. What I learned was that the processing places actually put a chemical in the meat--I can't remember what it is called, but it causes the meat to absorb water. They soak the meat in water, which adds significant weight to the meat, and of course, when you buy a bag of frozen chicken breast or other frozen meat, you are buying 5 pounds for xx dollars. Well chances are, that you are paying for a lot of water that has been absorbed in the meat thanks to the chemical they add. Of course, when you cook the frozen, water logged meat, the excess water boils off, and suddenly your 4 ounce chicken breast weights a lot less, so in reality, your really paying a lot for that water!!!

So when we think we're saving by getting the frozen stuff, we'd actually be better off, buying fresh, freezing it ourselves and paying what may seem like a little more, and getting more ounces of meat for the money.

Once again...Fresh is always Best!!!

Mark

Excellent advice Mark and George. And sometimes you have to watch the "fresh" meats too, cause they add "water" to it. Anything to make a buck I guess..... Mad Mad Mad

It's also good to watch out for the meats in the "puff packed" containers. Walmart sells their meat like this - look at the plastic wrap on top and you'll see that it "puffs" out because air (and preservatives) have been pumped in to keep it *looking* fresh longer. They also add dyes to the meat! Aarrgh!

Of course the best way is to find a good butcher... but those are rare gems nowadays. If I had the means, we'd buy everything at the organic grocery... and only buy local... in season...

Unfortunately... that's NOT feasible for us!
