My boss puts out a big garden every year, and this year I bought him an ounce of Spaghetti Squash Seeds!!! Couldn't find them locally, so I got them from Gurneys. I'm so excited!! I spent almost $11 on the seeds, but if we have a bumper crop, I'll more than make my money back.

I put out my usual 2 tomatoe plants, 3 bell pepper plants, and some basil. I wonder how long it will take me to kill them this time. LOL!

Dinah, if he plants all those seeds, and they do well, you & the whole community will probably have plenty of spag squash!

And remember if he also plants pumpkins or other types of winter squash you will probably not notice a difference this year, but if you try to save the seeds (since you're having problems finding the seeds), they will cross. Remember those crazy pumpsquashes I had a few years ago?!!!

Now also remember that they will most likely come late in the year. (Late summer/fall) They are a fall/winter type squash. So whenever pumpkins come off will probably be when the spag squash will bear.

Hope they do well!!!

My boss just came in and said "my" spag sq plants are almost 2 feet high already!!! He counted and there are SEVENTEEN plants! And if I read the stuff right, each plant will produce up to 60 pounds of squash! You are so right Billie, I'm gonna have SS coming out my ears! I'm very excited!

You sound like me Tammy. So far my maters are looking good. I came home and there was one ripe one on the vine, but the birds had gotten to it, dang it!

And I just talked to my boss again, and he said there were 17 HILLS of SS, with THREE plants in each hill! That's 51 plants! at a rate of 60 lbs per plant, that's 3,060 pounds of SS!!! Holy Snot! I'm gonna have to buy a new freezer or two... LOL!

Hey Dinah!
Two foot high s squash!!! Wow, those are tall plants! I don't think mine ever grow tall like that. They most spread out on the ground (like squash usually do.). As for 60 pounds per plant (or even hill for that matter), sounds like a LOT of squash to me. Even the year I got the huge bumper crop, I'm sure mine didn't do near that! I can't remember now how many squash per plant I generally had that year. Nor even how many plants & squash I had. But that sure sounds high to me. Maybe!!! ???
At any rate, if they do well, I'm sure your gonna have a LOT of squash!!!

I had maybe 12 - 15 PLANTS (4 o 5 hills with 3 plants per hill). And that year I had LOTS of squash. Had quite a few last year. Don't think I counted them. I ate one of them just a week or so ago.

Enjoy Dinah!!!

I was wrong, here's what Gurney's says about them:

Height: 24 inches
Spacing: 8 - 10 feet between hills
Depth: 1 inch
Spread: Vine
Sun/Shade: Full Sun
Germination: 8 - 10 days
Days To Maturity: 90 days
Yield: 100 lbs/100 foot row
Fruit: Oblong fruits. Hard, smooth, yellowish-tan rind with string -like, golden yellow strands of flesh.
Comments: 5 -7 fruits/vine. Ready to harvest when skin color changes from cream to buff. Can be stored 1 - 2 months. Very easy to grow. Smooth, cylindrical fruits.

I'll have to get out to his farm and get some pictures of them.

I meant to ask you Billie, how did you store yours? Freeze them?

Well, sounds like the 2' isn't unusual. Course things just don't grow quite the same in WY as they do in other areas. And my soil isn't the greatest.
It the crop does well, and it sounds like it is, 5-7 squash of varying sizes per plant (or hill?) could well be a reality.

I store mine spread out on a table in my basement. Since you don't have a basement (I don't think), and probably don't have a cellar to store such in, then you may very well have to freeze most of yours. You can find places around your house to "store" some of them tho probably. The cooler the better (not freezing). And plenty of space between them. Well, just not all together in a clump.
Something we're learning is test them when you think they are about ready, by lightly pressing your fingernail in the skin. It it leaves a mark, wait a few more days. If it doesn't mark with light pressure, it is probably ready. Cut the stem at least 1' away from the plant. And it is best to l harden them by leaving them sit in the garden for a few days before bringing them in. (No need for this if you are going to cook &/or freeze them right away.) If they are not fully mature, they won't keep long sitting out. I have lost one from last year's garden so far. (That I know of. I'm not there right now to check on them.)

edited to say: I just found a post from 2005 that said that I had over 50 the year before!

Tammy, you sound so much like me! I have a black thumb for gardening, but so far my maters and peppers look great. I planted some basil that practically died on the vine, but I cut them back and it is coming back just fine. I always have the best intentions, but rarely succeed.... You should see what Rachel has planted! Still kicking myself for not getting more pictures.

Well, thought I'd give you a Skettie Squash Update. My boss came in today and I was wrong, there are 16 plants all together. He says they have literally taken over the garden. There are vines growing up his corn! He is just amazed, and slightly ticked at me I think! BUT he didn't follow directions either, and planted them 4 ft apart instead of 8 ft apart, like it said to...

I can't wait till they start producing!!!
