Okay, I confess that my smoothies are more like ice cream. YUM!! Problem is, I tend to have too much at once, and when I freeze the rest, it gets so hard that it takes forever (or some nuke time) to get it soft enough to eat. I think I found the solution for that little problem though. Actually the solution for both problems. I'm getting a popsicle mold.
http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-Freezer-Popsicle-Maker/dp/B0000CF7H6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1264432219&sr=8-2
I thought this was a tad overpriced, but I know it will get lots of use here. It will even be great when the grandkids come to visit next summer.
So, anyone have any unbelievably great smoothie recipes? I love the Strawberries and Cream Smoothie on page 162 in the Good Carb Family Cookbook, but I'd love to see what you guys can come up with too.
I just LOVE smoothies!! |

I must have given my "classic" (read old) tupperware popsicle set to Goodwill by accident when we moved. Distressing as I LOVE to make my strawberry sherbert into popsicles. _________________ Foxye

Foxye,
My popsicle thingie arrived this afternoon. I'll let you know how well it works (or doesn't). I need to get to the store for strawberries first.

I decided not to wait for the strawberries, and instead, used frozen blueberries. Made up a batch of the "Strawberries and Cream Smoothies" (substituting blueberries for the strawberries) recipe on page 162 of the Food Carb Family Cookbook, in my new food processor, and then put the mix in my newly arrived popsicle maker.
I haven't tasted one of these yet, but I'm impressed with the results (hey, we already know the recipe is great tasting), and instead of 4 smoothie servings, I got ten snack servings. which cuts those 7 net carbs way down too (if I can just manage to eat only one).
Now the only problem is whether this should be posted as a dessert? A snack? Or a beverage?
And the results:

It looks GREAT Anne! You have to try one and tell us how it is. I may have to get one of those popsicle trays. _________________ |

It was okay, but I personally prefer the strawberry smoothies. Hopefully I'll get to the store and get some strawberries tomorrow. I'd also love to try some of the recipes that David posted in the beverage forum, but I'm a bit leery of spending money on protein powder in the event I don't like it. I've read some mixed reviews, and some said it didn't taste very good.
They did freeze well though, and although it took me a little while to get them out of the molds (hey, I'm new at this), they unmolded nicely.
This little gizmo was well worth the price for me, because in addition to having snacks in the freezer, and ready to go, it will really help me with portion control. When I make smoothies and don't freeze them, I tend to eat at least two portions at a time, and at 7 net carbs per (for the strawberry...... more for the blueberry I imagine), one portion should suffice. |

Probably a little over an hour, so don't serve before I get there or they will melt. Oh that'd be okay too, I'd just suck em up with a straw. _________________ Foxye

Anne, There are differences in the way different protein powders taste. And I would advise that you be sure and get Whey protein powder. The Designer Whey is good. So is the Body Fortress. They also both do well in the protein "candies", etc. While EAS is cheaper, and OK for making smoothies, it doesn't do well in a lot of the recipes.
And that being said, I usually don't like any of the protein pwd "shakes" without added ingredient, making smoothies & such.
Most of the WalMarts carry the Body Fortress pwd. Just make sure it is the whey protein pwd, not one of the body builders, etc. All WM's are not created equal, so no guarantee on availability.
I'd suggest buying vanilla to begin with, as you can add chocolate, or other flavors if desired, and you can see how you like it before buying more than one flavor. _________________ Billie

Thanks for the tip Billie!! I was wondering about protein powders myself. I will make a trip to Wal-Mart this weekend to see if I can find it. Thanks again. _________________ |

You're welcome Kat. Anne posted another thread about Protein powder in the General Forum, and I posted more there. _________________ Billie
