My next door neighbor was kind enough to bequeath me his figs when he went up north to Michigan a couple of months ago. I know nothing about figs - I didn't even know they grew in trees. Fig Newtons is the full extent of my fig experience.

How can you tell when they are ripe? I think he said July is their time.

I have a whole treeful - what do you do with them?

I love figs (fresh ripe from the tree)!!
I usually just eat them as is fresh (RIPE).

You can make jam from them. A recipe I used to use used strawberry jello. Wouldn't use that one now, but if you'd like me to post the recipe, I'll try to find it so you can try to adapt it if you like. I've used Koolaid to flavor gelatin (since I don't use jello w/aspartame, nor sugar, and can't find it with other sweeteners). That would work very well in the jam recipe.
You an also make it just fig jam, but I personally like the strawberry/fig jam best.

Hmmmmmm Can't remember eating figs any other way, and don't know if they freeze well, or would taste good canned. Maybe someone else has other ideas.

Sorry I had just now found this post!!! Shocked

And missed you're asking how you tell they are ripe. Tho now they are probably all gone. Confused They should be purple (dark purple?) and somewhat soft to the touch when ripe. Don't want them to get too soft tho, as with most fruits.
Sorry, wish I had seen this post sooner. I was probably having problems with my computer, or away when you posted. Anyway I didn't get the "new" sign, and just found it.
