Woo hoo!!!!
I got a 2 pack at Sam's for $1.16 each I believer it was the other day. And now Wal*Mart has the Philly for the same price (anyway it is $1.16 each), and the store brand for $.98 I believe it is. I do prefer to by the Philly tho. It at least claims to have lower carbs.
Thanks for the heads up Dinah!!! _________________ Billie

Just wanted to let everyone know my experience with on sale cream cheese.
My hubby went shopping after work one night last holiday season to WM.
He found Philly brand for .96 and bought about 6, I think. He couldn't understand why one display was on sale, and what was in the regular case wasn't. Anyway, they had just gone off date and had the texture of having been frozen. I tried working with it, but my frosting had a grainy texture.
Kraft was very nice and refunded my $$ very quickly and promised to look into the situation at my local WM.
I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.
Take care and enjoy the holiday.

Beth, I hate that that happened to you (and your husband).
Personally I've never seen that case (some cc on sale, and some not) in any of my stores. But, I know it could happen in a case as seems to have happened there. Sounds like they indeed had some get frozen for whatever reason. So then (also because of the exp date) put that lot on clearance.
As for exp dates on Cream Cheese in general, it has been my experience (Many times) that it will keep refrigerated for long past the exp date. I've had it for over a year past the date (bought up a bunch on sale), and as long as it has never been opened it was still good.
Freezing is a different story. It can be frozen, and then used, but it will have that weird texture, and can only be used successfully for some things. And I don't know about if if has been frozen, thawed, and then kept refrigerated. Not sure about how long it would last & stay good then.
I do know that this time of year many stores traditionally have put Cream Cheese on sale. Seems how much of a sale is often decreasing thru the years, as the reg price keeps rising. So if all the cream cheese is on sale (meaning all the same brand), not just some of it , then I would have a tendency to think it was OK.
I do usually try to check out exp dates when buying a large quantity of it, and try to look for the one with the furtherest away dates. (usually when I think about it!)
Now, after the CC is opened and exposed to the air, it is quite a different matter. Then the exp date goes out the window anyway, as it doesn't last nearly as long after being opened!
This was all not to discredit what you said, but rather to say that under normal circumstances the date isn't as critical as some might think. What you got was quite different!
Thank You for bringing that possibility to our attention!!!! If some of the cream cheese (or other dairy products) are on sale, and others (of the same product & brand) aren't, we need to be cautious. _________________ Billie
