Hi everyone,
Help
I am a newbie living in UK. I purchased the first 2 books a couple of years ago and love them.
I have Hypothyroid disease and hope that low carb will make me feel a lot better.
I would like to try the berry smoothies but cannot have soy as it upsets by condition, so can anyone suggest a substitute please,

Hi Linda. of course you can make any smoothie including Anthony's Berry Good Smoothies with good ole Half and Half cream which is just half milk and half heavy cream in one carton here in the states--maybe there too. But also just heavy cream or yes, even a little whole milk is fine but milk does have the most carbs . And although I have not done so, the newest thing is to use coconut milk(unsweetened).

Good Luck and Stella Style is about finding what works best for you as we are all different! A note also , when we wrote that recipe many years ago, Anthony was lactose intolerant and we started experimenting with soy milk in place of heavy cream in baking and found it not only worked but was cheaper too! It's under Forum on the bar above. Also check out the help from the toolbar, and there is a Help forum also. You'll find a lot of answers there. Because of spam & bad posts being able attack this section, it has been closed to new posts, but it is still there to browse, glean answers from. (No spam there now.) Most problems have been addressed there. There is a sticky of FAQs in the General forum. It has links to lots of as the name says Most Frequently Asked Questions about Stella Style WOL!!!. For that matter be sure to check out all the stickies when you have a question. Good chance it may have been answered in the FAQ's or other stickies.

Linda, I don't know what all is available to you there. It has been several years since I visited with friends who lived in the UK, and we talked about differences in what they/you had and what we had. (We actually were all living in yet another country at the time.) I wasn't Low Carbing them. I would have been very hard to get a LOT of the products that we in both countries can get now for low carbing where were were living (Saudi Arabia). But actually a lot of products are available now that were not then (anywhere).
Point being, I'm not sure what is available to you, as I said in the first sentence. IF you can get almond milk there, it would also work. Coconut milk is available here in both cans & cartons, but are very different "products". But either would work for the smoothies.
Like George said, it is about finding out what works for "you". I now do a lot more experimenting in my cooking than I had ever done in the past. I've learned that if I don't like something in a recipe (or for health reasons can't eat it) I often experiment with other things so I can "make it work".
Also, I realize that "we" often refer to foods that you are not familiar with, but may eat all the time. Just not familiar with the name we call it by, and vise versa!! So if you wonder about what something is, be sure to ask! Maybe we can figure out what you know it by.
I once told my English friends that I had had a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for lunch. (Remember I wasn't low carbing.) They had never heard of that, and thought they'd try it sometime. It later dawned on me that they would probably be trying a peanut & gelatin sandwich!! Oops. Glad I managed to talk to them about it again before they tried it!! Embarassed We speak the same language, but yet we don't!

I have been making smoothies with Silk Pure Almond Unsweetened milk. It has only 1 carb but 1 carb of dietary fiber so really 0 carbs. It is tastes good with the fresh frozen berries, some Splenda and some DaVinci flavored Syrup. It is also low fat and low calorie.

You know, I started off writing my post above to tell her about using Almnd milk (If she can get it), and never did say that! Embarassed But again, not sure what she can get there in the UK.

There are some recipes & videos online about making your own almond, cashew, or coconut milks. (Have never seen one recipe or video that shows them all, but rather each individually.) You need a pretty good blender or food processor to make them tho.

I do have a question about squash. Pumpkin ,squash and summer squash are included in the fruits and veggies list, but over here we have mainly butternut squash, is this allowed as I do love it roasted and in soups .

Hello daisymay! Glad to see you here. I'm new myself and am interested in hearing ( reading) the answer to your question. I was looking (again) for spaghetti squash last night but they are not available here until late spring and summer. Somehow my yellow squash and zucchini (purchased last night) didn't make it home with me. I thought maybe they had rolled out of the bags in the trunk of the car last night, but hubby checked this AM and no sign of them = P . I'll need to check my receipt to make sure they are on it and then call the store if it was an error in getting those items added to my cart while being bagged.

What is your climate like in the next few months where you live? Do you live in an area where growing something might be possible? Squash are THE EASIEST to grow, if you have much sun and enough soil space for them to spread out. They do enjoy a bit of sand & good drainage too. We have huge trees in our yard, so too much shaded area for growing a garden. I have had to resort to container gardening and though I DID try squash last summer and the plants grew really well, there wasn't enough space for the squash fruit to develop. Some people with growing space allow neighbors to help them grow and then they are sharing the work AND the vegetables. Hopefully, someone will see your question today about butternut squash, and provide an answer. These are NOT allowed on the Somersizing WOE due to natural sugar content, but they may be an option here. Good luck in finding the perfect balance you need for your good health. sandi

Linda, Butternut Squash is not a preferred squash, as it is pretty high in carbs. 100gs (edible portion) is 10.49 with 3.2g fiber = 7.29 Net carbs. That's pretty high in sugars/carbs!
I personally try to stay away from Buttenut Squash. You might be able to eat it in small quantities once in a while. You would need to see how it affects you weight wise personally. it s not on the recommended list tho.

I will try to find some of the ones on the list ans experiment with them.
We don't get much sun over here Sandi, not long spells anyway.

Just like to add that Spaghetti Squash is a "winter" squash that keeps months after being picked. It should be more readily available now from last season or towards the end of the summer as in August. But in any populous area it is available year round as it is imported from many countries.

Good to know, George, about spaghetti squash. When I couldn't find it the other day in a 2nd store which carries them if available, I asked the produce stocker and he said it will be a while more..maybe a couple of months. I do appreciate how long they last. One I bought at the end of summer last yr in Walmart was quite pricey! I haven't been in Walmart in a while and they may have them in...if not now, then soon.

My hubby's parents still put in a small garden when they are up to it, and they may be interested in trying their hand at growing some....or maybe our new neighbor! He has scads of sun shine on his property. : >

I usually use half for a savory meal and the other half for a simple dessert by adding butter, cinnamon and sweetener (sometimes fresh nutmeg). My hubby isn't into them, but it's one of my favorite things! sandi

Hello Sandi,

Just wanted to say that I too like to make a smaller spaghetti squash and eat half or half of a half, depending on the size and then use some for dessert later in the day with cinnamon, a little fresh grated nutmeg and little oil that was sprinkled on while cooking face down in a dish gives all the flavor I need.

Hello Elizabeth,
My daughter was able too find a large and a small spaghetti squash for me in Houston and brought them to me this past week-end. The small one , I baked yesterday and sprayed the oil on before placing upside down and baked about 40 mins, then added a little water to continue baking for the carmelization I like. Some do better with this than others. I skipped the savory phase and went straight for the dessert style on half! LOL (It had been a while). The other half will either be a snack today or part of my dinner tonight. I go through phases so I may become disinterested in these again, come summer time, but for now, I'm enjoying them when I can get them. I was glad to read you enjoy these too. ( How did I make it through so much of my life never even knowing these existed??? ) I guess if more ppl knew what they were and how to prepare them, we might never see them in stock.....ORRRR...maybe if we spread the word, the stores would bring in even more of them, as they do watermelon and cantelope, by the heaping piles. We can hope and make requests! = >
