I am so mad at myself! Evil or Very Mad I bought chicken breasts from Sam's - the same chicken I have bought a million times, so I didn't bother to read the label - only to find out after it is too late that there is sugar and "spice extractive" in it. It had a rubbery texture and tasted nasty and worst of all, had 1 g carbs per serving! Why in the word would they put sugar in chicken? No No

The good news is that we were not glutened. At least there is a silver lining, right? Wink

Just a heads up - don't buy the nasty sugary, spice extractivey rubber chicken from Sam's Club. You have been warned. Crazy Eyes

doesn't that make you mad? I was looking at Kroger's roasted chickens last night, and the rub on it has funky ingredients in it too. But I lucked out, they had a gorgeous roasted pork roast that was roasted nekid! real moist and tender, nothing but meat. probably paid too much for it, but it made 6 nice slices. its been hard to change my cooking/buying habits since I'm only feeding me now.

Where I'm living now, there is a mom and pop grocery about a block away. They have really nice fresh cut meats. No added water like they do at Walmart and Kroger. A little pricey, but I usually shop their sales. They don't have a huge variety either. No ground turkey or chicken, just simple pork, beef and poultry cuts.

I scored on meats last night at Kroger. chicken thighs, boneless chicken breasts, minute steak, and a skirt steak. Got my protein to last me a while! I'm just mad at myself cause I forgot to get asparagus. they had it on sale, and I forgot all about it. May have to go again tonight!

ok, nuff of my ramblings......

I haven't EVER been able to find a rotisserie or roasted chicken "out there" that didn't have funky marinade with added sugar. It's so disappointing. I finally had to drag out the old SHOW TIME rotisserie I was gifted yrs ago and had used many times in the past, but it's bulky and a space eater. ( this may SEEM off topic, but it ties together). There were other appliances in the way on my counters and I began to search for a cart that could help with that. I mean several YEARS of looking, before finally finding one at SAM's in chrome and with great rollers. We got one to see if it woulld serve the purpose, fit our spaces, etc, and I liked it so much I requested another just like it for my birthday! Hubby put each of them together easily and then bought "S" hooks at Home D for hanging my "SANTA gift" cookware from the sides. I have deep drawers down low ( difficult to open when weighed down with pots) and the cookware booklet advised against stacking them, which was fine with me bc I want them up high enough for easy grab as needed.

Anyway..... one cart has the rotisserie I can pull from the 2nd shelf to the top and actually cook while it's ON the cart. Injecting a sf marinade of your own can make your LC life easier. If possible, get a small rotisserie you can use for fish, pork, poultry, beef,...and even grilled vegiies in the clamp-shut basket! This old one's gear had a squeak as it turned for a while, but some wd40 stopped it. Think of not having to heat the big oven in hot months ... it's a good appliance for Low Carb cooking.

I still think contacting store deli's and brand name meat companies we'd like sf options from, is the way to go. They DO like customer feedback and sometimes feed the need. You should bring up the fact that there are 1,000s of low carb ppl looking for these things. Money talks and we're the paying consumer population..

Ugh a lot of Walmart stuff "has been injected with a solution". No No We need good old fashioned butcher shops again! I'm not sure if they exist anymore but they don't around where I live out in the country. I'm originally from Chicago so they may have some but that is a specialty shop these days and out in the country....Forget about it!

Rae, I was just mentioning trying to help keep the small mom and pop shops open by giving them business and one we have is a meat market with mainly natural meats. They have sugar added in marinated chicken and they also stuff pork chops and have side dishes made up and frozen if anyone wants to get a meal to take home and build around. I try to stick to the unadukterated items... no ANYthing on them, but they hear me asking about sugars and know I'm reading the labels of seasonings then returning them to the shelves, bc they have the sugar. I did see a steak seasoning with no added sugar yesterday and may get it at some point, but was buying the meats instead. Let your store meat guys in the back know what you are looking for and then ask in a request form at the front service desk... and this can be any product. They just want to see an interest in it. Get your family and friends to help approach them at dif times so they can see there's an interest in meats with no injected solutions for color or flavor enhancers or preservatives to fake you out that it LOOKS fresher than it is. Wouldn't hurt .

Well that was nice of me to post and disappear, wasn't it? Embarassed Sorry about that!

I agree that we need more mom and pop type places. I live in a smallish town and our only choices are Walmart, Sam's Club, Winn Dixie and Piggly Wiggly. ll of them truck their food in from who knows where.

I learned my lesson with this, that's for sure. Smile
