Well, tonight I tried a recipe using a rutabaga.... It wasnt too bad at all. Looking at it, it really looks like steak fries. I used one rutabaga, cut it into 1/4" rounds and then into 'fries'. In a bowl drizzle with olive oil to coat adn seasoned with sea salt, pepper, paprika, garlic and onion powder. I layed them out on parchment paper on a pan and baked at 425 for about 30 min. Flipping half way through. They probably would have gotten a little crispier if I cooked them longer or perhaps without the parchment paper and just on the pan, but our brats were done and didnt feel like waiting.

Billie, you might want to give it a try... it has a neutral taste, and makes for great 'fries'. Im curious to experiment with it and see if it will make other 'potatoe' like dishes.... Tonight im making beef bourguignon and will add in 2 small turnips. (Make me think Im eating potatoes...haha)

Maybe someday. I've read people say they used them in either George's mashed cauli dish or something similar, and they really liked them. But they already liked rutabaga.
I've also heard some say they were similar to turnip. Some say not as strong, some say stronger. lol
I do NOT like turnips!!!!!!!!! Tho I have eaten a few fried, or oven fried that were OK (very young turnips usually, and not very strong). Also been able to eat them raw (the young ones). But I can't tolerate them otherwise!

Turnips were eaten a lot where I grew up, but not rutabagas.

Since you like rutabagas, I bet you'd like them mashed kinda like potatoes. George's recipe, or similar.

I eat the mashed (twice baked) cauliflower. Think I'll probably stick with that for now. Smile

Your right, they are similar to the turnip. I have tried George's mock mashed potato recipe using the cauliflower. It wasnt too bad. My mind hasnt been too fooled yet into thinking its "fake potatoes"..Lol Im sure if I had put them in the food processor the texture would have been a little easy to fool the brain, but I just used my regular potato masher. Next time I will definatly use the processor.. Very Happy

I think we are better off just thinking of them as a new type side rather than thinking of them as mashed potatoes.
But some people can actually think of them as potatoes.
They are definitely different tho. Still good, just different.
