This week, the grocery stores all seem to have hams on sale as well as turkeys. I went out to pick up a precooked spiral ham. Still a good deal at $1.49 pound, but I found a better deal. Our Food Pyramid had shank hams, fresh, for $1.19 a pound. They sliced it for free too. I got a huge amount of meat--only one bone for under 12 dollars. I will be able to make about 4-5 meals with it. We ate some slices pan fried. Then I roasted the rest for about an hour and a half.
This morning I made a huge ham breakfast casserole. I still have enough to make a ham and rutabaga casserole and plenty of sandwiches for my high carbers. The bones are going in for broth.
Check your stores for specials too. This is a real savings, and the ham tastes so much better than the pre-cooked. My hubby told me over and over how much he loved this ham. That was worth it even if it wasn't such a bargain!
