I never knew there was anything but regular sauerkraut, until today. I purchased 2 small cans of Silver Floss brand at a local 'scratch and dent' store. Today I cooked them with some hotdogs. I made hubby krautdogs w/ mustard on a roll. When I ate mine, minus the mustard and roll, I thought the kraut tasted odd. I then noticed I had purchased 2 different flavors. One shredded, and one Bavarian Style. I looked at the ingredients and found that Bavarian style has corn syrup. There weren't a lot of carbs with the added ingredient, but why add it??
I just wanted to give a heads up that this does exist and keep your eyes open.
Take care

Can't stand Bavarian Style myself (even without the corn syrup)! Cause I can't stand caraway seeds! Ugh!!!
But as far as caraway seeds & Bavarian kraut goes, to each his/her own (not all Bavarian Kraut has corn syrup, but it is sweet).
Just shows that we have to be vigilant in looking at labels. I find I get lax too often. I too sometimes get home, eat something, and then realize it has sugar or corn syrup in it! When will I learn?
Bavarian Kraut as I said above is sweetened. I'm assuming they add the corn syrup cause it is (or at least has been) cheaper than sugar. But who knows why all companies insist on adding corn syrup to sooooo many things, ???
Maybe companies have figured out that corn syrup is habit forming, and hope to "hook" us thru its use? ????
Thanks for the warning!!! _________________ Billie

Yes, corn syrup has been much cheaper for mass production than sugar. It is getting less so, but so far I think it still is. That is actually why all the companies have been using it either in conjunction with some sugar, or instead of. That is exactly why the "cola" companies have all added it to their drinks for years now. It was so much cheaper than sugar.
But for the life of me, I wonder why there is sweetener of any kind in a lot of the products out there that contain corn syrup and/or sugar!!! _________________ Billie

I guess I was 'shocked' because when I think of sauerkraut, I sure don't think of adding any kind of sweetener.
