I recommend you get a copy of DANDR (Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution) or Protein Power by Dr. & Dr. Eades and read up on ketosis (or lipolysis) and ketosis vs. ketoacidosis.
One of the questions in Chapter 5 of Protein Power is:
"Q: But aren't ketones and ketosis dangerous?
A: Unless you are a type I diabetic, not at all. You might think so, however, because some health writers such as Jane Brody of The New York Times, a major proponent of the low-fat, high-complex-carbohydrate diet, say that ketones are "toxic compounds that can damage the brain and cause nausea, fatigue, and apathy." She goes on to tell you that ketones are "fat waste products" that "pollute" the blood. But Dr. Lubert Stryer, Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University and the author of the biochemistry textbook used in most medical schools, says ketones are "normal fuels of respiration and are quantitatively important as sources of energy." "Indeed," Dr. Stryer continues, "heart muscle, and the renal cortex [kidney] use [ketones] in preference to glucose." Drs. Donald and Judith Voet, authors of another popular medical biochemistry textbook, say that ketones "serve as important metabolic fuels for many peripheral tissues, particularly heart and skeletal muscle." So if you believe Ms. Brody, you would think that ketones poison you; if you trust the consensus among medical experts and scientists, you will understand that ketones are a perfectly normal fuel used preferentially by most of the tissues in the body for their energy needs. In fact - except for type I diabetics - there is no evidence for the opinion that ketones are dangerous."
The smell is the ketones released through the lungs. According to the Eades, the best way to combat the ketosis breath is to drink lots of water and make lots of urine. If you pee alot the excess ketones will escape your body that way. If not, about the only way out is through respiration.
Dr. Atkins discusses ketosis or lipolysis in Chapter 6 of DANDR.
And remember the smell and taste of ketosis. It means you are burning fat. |

just to emphasize one thing. This will not damage a healthy persons kidneys. Several studies have been done. one compared this WOE to people on a low fat vergetarian diet. Kidney health was not affected. Anohter study was done on weightlifters and actually showed improved kidney functioning.
drink water. don't worry. if you experience problems see a doctor. |
