I would like to know if anyone out there has had problems with acid reflux on this lifestyle. I had GERD before I started LC and had hoped to resolve my GERD problems with the lifestyle change. However, I have really been suffering the last week. I have only been on this program 10 days. Please give me some input!
Thanks, Laurie |

| I have been doing LC on and off for many years now and have acid reflux for about 5 years. I notice that I actually have LESS symptoms of reflux when I stick to LC. There are, however, some foods that do seem to affect me, strawberries, a cup of coffee even when loaded with cream, and as for alcohol, I only try to drink a few sips on holidays or special occasions but even that sets me off into a bad attack of reflux. I find if I stick to meats and cheeses and nuts and LC vegetables, I am fine. And then there are days that just seem to be worse than others and I don't think they have anything to do at all with what I have eaten. Maybe just stress or some other factors involved. All in all, I feel so much better with everything staying with the LC way of eating that I just figure my reflux would be worse and more often not eating this way. I hope this makes a bit of sense, I am craving a cup of coffee now but trying to resist because of the reflux I know I will get. Hang in there and give it a chance and see if you find, like me, the basic LC foods actually are way better for reflux. |

Hi ,
I started having acid reflux and I found out the reason was that I was eating wheat. Everytime I ate it, I would get acid reflux. I found out I was gluten intolerant and I have a celiac gene. When I stopped eating wheat the AR stopped mostly but would kick in if I over ate. Now that my appetite is lower and I lost weight, and I don't eat a lot at a meal, I rarely have it. Also, don't drink a lot of fluids with your meal. Wait an hour before drinking water as fluids with a meal fill up the stomach and make acid reflux easier.
A doctor on tv said that the stomach track is naturally curved and if you have a lot of fat on your body, it pulls down the stomach straightening it out and makes it easier for the acid to go back up the esophagus. He said the best way to stop acid reflux is to lose weight. So if you have a lot of weight to lose, you'll have to tolerate it until your fat level drops on your body. |

Heartburn and digestive distress totally went away once I started Atkins.
For me it was the pasta and rice, not the spicy sauces and gravies. |

| One of the symptoms of Gall bladder disease is acid reflux too. If the diet doesn't help, then you might want to have your gall bladder checked. If you are not producing enough bile acids to help you digest fats that can cause reflux too. Overweight, fatty liver, and gall bladder problems go hand in hand. |

I too have found that when I am doing low carbs, I lose my heart burn/acid reflux problems. The only time I had the problem while on the diet was when I would eat custard made with cream. That would do a number on me. Sugar and starches are what give me the problem, especially when they are combined in a pastry. If I pig out on candy or cookies, like during the Holidays, the burning monster comes back and unfortunately, stays awhile. So for me, just the relief of no acid makes the diet all worth while, all by it self! Weight loss is a fringe benefit.
