Hi everyone!
I am trying a recipe in George Stella's cookbook but it calls for no sugar added vanilla extract. Does anyone know where I can buy this? I live in northern Ca but haven't seen it as an option in the grocery store.
Thanks so much in advance!!
((((hugs))))

Hi Anjanette.
Try the imitation vanilla extract. The ones I've picked up at Bi-Lo & Walmart have been sugar-free.
So, what are you making?

Hi Anjanette!
I found the easiest way to find sugar free vanilla extract is to make your own-the only drawback is it takes awhile but the result is worth it in the long run because you know exactly what is in it without all those chemicals. Put three or four vanilla beans in a jar with a lid and cover it with vodka, it will have to sit for a couple of weeks in a cool dark place. When I make mine it hasn't been too bad after a week or so. I hope that helps!

Where can I buy 'No Sugar Added' vanilla extract?
We get this question a lot, so I will definitely be adding links to this thread all over the site...
All you have to do is Read the Ingredients List and check for "added sugars," such as sugar, corn syrup, etc. (Click Here for a full list of sugars.) It does not have to say "No Sugar Added" on the package, and usually doesn't.
I have never been to a grocery store, ever, that didn't have at least one brand of Vanilla Extract that didn't have sugar.
Here are some examples from what we have in our house right now.
We get this one at Wal-Mart.
Remember, always check ALL extracts and spices for added sugars as well. This one is fine.
If you can get out to a health store in your area, you may be able to find an all-natural vanilla extract that doesn't add sugar, such as this one.
So remember, just always CHECK THE LABEL OF EVERYTHING YOU BUY ALWAYS!!! Even if it says NO SUGAR ADDED on the front, check the ingredients list.
NEVER JUDGE A PRODUCT BY IT'S COVER.
Companies can and will lie on the front of a package, so nothing short of flipping it over and reading the ingredients list will help you. _________________ -Anthony Stella

Edit : for what its worth, two weeks after posting this I realized half of my post ended up under the wrong thread so I just ditched it. Wise man say: "Doh!"

I have been thinking of doing this because it seems like you can get the whole beans cheaper than non-imitation vanilla w/o sugar added. Do you have to use "good" vodka or can you get whatever's cheapest?

Hi!
I've definitely found that making my own vanilla is the way to go-I know exactly whats in it without all the chemicals they put in the store bought stuff. I don't think the quality of the vodka matters that much, I used what I had kicking around the house (it happened to be the more expensive vodka that was left over) but I wouldn't skimp on the vanilla beans. I use the really long Madagascar vanilla beans, get mine from the Penzey's spice catalog-www.penzeys.com but I'm sure you could find them at the grocery store or specialty market. All their spices are really top notch. I hope that helps you out. I learned how to make mine the hard way after paying way too much at one of those gourmet kitchen stores and felt sooo stupid after I realized how easy it was to make.

So I went shopping for vanilla beans at a middle eastern grocery store where I KNOW they used to carry them for dirt cheap. The guy who, I'm assuming was the manager or owner, told me they had to stop carrying them because vanilla has suddenly become a big thing in beauty products.
Supply and demand--price went up--WAY up. His cost is over $100/lb wholesale, and he didn't think they'd sell at the new price.
So I guess I'll try your Penzey's store! |

Hi Anjanette
I also live in Northern California. There are several really good sugar free vanilla's at Trader Joes. They are made preserved with alcohol - but they are wonderfully fragrant and very inexpensive!

glad to hear walmart has this. thanks for the info. I was in a supermarket irecently, in the health food section, and a small bottle of sugar free vanilla was $8.99. I put that down fast.. I was not going to spend that kind of money. I figured I could find it cheaper. Now I have the answer without going from store to store! thanks

If any of you have a Michael's craft store near you, they carry sugar free vanilla in their cake decorating supplies. Who knew??? I was looking at some of their pans & saw the vanilla. I believe it was imitation, but it didn't say that. But I think making your own would be a great idea too.
Good Luck! June |

I finally got around to making my own vanilla... it's brewing in the kitchen right now. Only had 2 beans so I guess I'll have to let it sit extra long!
Trader Joe's stores had sugar free natural vanilla AND beans for a rather low price.... I think it was around $6 for 2 beans or 3.49 for a small bottle of the extract. _________________

I found my vanilla extract at our local health food store, it is called: favorganics/organic vanilla extract ingredients: water, organic alcohol, organic vanilla bean extractives.
I know there are web sites out there where these types of things can be ordered. I just prefer to buy local when possible.
Everyone have a great week.
P.S. : I have not been doing well on my weight loss journey, I restarted today. I woke up late and took 3 lettuce leaves, mayo and low salt turkey and provolone and I can honestly say I did not miss the bread.
Now that is only 1 meal down. But thinking positive.

I am a vanilla bean gourmet! I love Vanilla in any form! I get my vanilla here and I also get vanilla powder and paste! They are sugar free! My advice, try the sampler pack it is so good and the shipping isn't bad at all! Take care and be "sweet", David http://www.icdc.com/~vanilla/ _________________ Praise loudly, blame softly and treat each person you meet as a brother or sister!
