Well kids, with the economy like it is, the moderators got together and decided that maybe it might be a good idea to post a forum that gave ideas on how to maintain our LIFESTYLE eating SS on a budget.
Don't know about you but I could use all the help I can get!
Feel free to post any money saving tips, LEGITIMATE websites for savings, or anything else you can think of.
Still post your recipes on the recipe exchange forum, but you can link to them from here if you like.
And just a reminder, remember under the "forum" section on the tool bar is a search function that will give you a plethera of information! (don't you just love that word?)
Hope this helps!!!
hugzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz,
All the SS moderators! |

Great Idea all you moderators!! The dollars are really getting scarce.
I don't have any ideas that come to mind - except the one I think we all follow - Cook Ahead. It saves me from "grazing" when I have something already to heat and eat, and I'm sure it makes better "cents".
I do love to make broth to keep on hand to drink when I'm wanting something and don't know what I want. I take chicken & celery, onion, a little carrot, cabbage and cook it in the crock pot. Then I strain out the veggies & chicken and put the broth in a pitcher in the fridge. It is easy to pour a cup of broth and heat it in the microwave. You could use any low carb veggie - and leave out the chicken - and season it any way you like - and still have a delicious drink.
That's all I have for now ............ I'll think on it and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with. I think we can all use all the help we can get right now!

| Moderators what a good idea and I will have to really think on it but one thing I always do is what I learned from George and that always check out the "day old" bin in the fresh food departments. I find lots of things that I can readily take home and blanch or cook and freeze. I too make extras of meals and freeze and nuke later my fav is Georges egg cups and muffins. I can too and that helps and we have lots of tomatoes I've been canning. |

| Speaking of chicken broth earlier in the thread. My sister-in-law would use the left overs of the deboned chicken, turkey or beef to make broth. She would also season the broth by adding the peelings on onions, the upper stalks of celery, and tops of carrots instead of using the best part of the vegetable. I thought that was a money saving idea. She always strained the broth after cooking and discarded the vegetables and bones, since all she wanted was the flavor. Donna |

(Joyce slapping self on forehead)
Great info, Donna - I just threw away some celery tops yesterday while I was getting the "good" celery cleaned - all the while thinking of making broth today. DUH! Thanks for the tip - I'll use it next time!

A Website called "The Grocery Game" works with the sales in your area, matched with couponing and instant rebates, to get VERY low prices. The founder was featured on our local newscast earlier this year.
Much of what goes on sale is not fresh... boxed and canned foods... but a few times a year meat goes on sale (all grocery stores are on a predictable cycle... most folks simply don't have the time to maintain a price book for EVERY store in the area!) and you can get VERY good deals on toothpaste and other toiletries... good deals as in "free."
It takes a month or two for the cycle to "catch up" and you may not see anything that you need for a while, but you keep collecting coupons (not clipping, simply collecting the circular and filing them) and then check weekly for the sales. The print-outs are impressive.
You'll save on meats and, occasionally, seasonal veggies... as well as toiletries.
It's worth checking out - I think a four-week trial is a buck a week or something similar. |
